CVX-300 Excimer Laser System

Spectranetics manufactures and markets the only excimer laser system and disposable catheters for the treatment of peripheral and coronary arterial disease and lead extraction and management.

The Science of Excimer Laser Ablation

Photoablation is the use of light to break down, vaporize and remove matter. Spectranetics CVX-300® Excimer Laser facilitates photoablation via a variety of Spectranetics catheters to remove binding scar tissue surrounding cardiac pacemaker ICD leads.

The mechanisms of actions are:

Photochemical: Breaking molecular bonds

  • UV light pulse hits tissue for 135-billionths of a second (135ns); the duration of the laser pulse
  • 50 microns penetration
  • Billions of molecular bonds fractures per pulse
  • After 135-billionths of a second, laser energy is not emitted

Photothermal: Producing thermal energy

  • Absorption vibrates the molecular bonds of the plaque
  • Vibration of bonds heats intracellular water
  • Water vaporizes, molecules break apart, and cells rupture
  • Expanding vapor bubble forms in 100-millionths of a second (100 µs)
  • 1,000 times the duration of the actual laser energy emission

Photomechanical: Creating kinetic energy

  • Expansion and collapse of vapor bubble breaks down tissue and clears byproducts away from tip
  • Byproducts of ablation are water, gas, and small particles
  • Entire process time per pulse is 400-millionths of a second (400 µs)
  • 4,000 times the duration of the actual laser energy emission

Lead Locking Devices

When removing the lead is the right choice, choose the Spectranetics Lead Locking Device (LLD®) and make it EZ!

LLD EZ® combines the best of the original LLD family and enhanced tip design with new ease-of-use features to provide a flexible traction solution for leads targeted for removal today.

EZ Sizing

LLD EZ accommodates a wide range of leads with inner lumen diameters from 0.015″ (0.38mm) to 0.023″ (0.58mm).

EZ Locking and Unlocking

Only Spectranetics’ Lead Locking Device technology provides a stable traction platform by deploying a braided mesh to lock securely along the entire lead lumen. LLD provides proven1 capability to unlock and reposition after initial deployment.

EZ Tracking

Flexible platinum-iridium tip design and sleek profile facilitate tracking and passage through tightly curved leads and past some points of lead lumen damage.

EZ Viewing

Highly visible radiopaque marker assists identification of LLD EZ tip location under fluoroscopy.

SLS II Laser Sheath

When removing cardiac leads you expect safe, predictable and successful outcomes. These outcomes are possible with low force laser lead technology. Clinical evidence shows laser lead removal significantly reduces the force necessary for lead extraction. With low force:

  • Minimize the risk of vessel damage
  • Lower the risk of damage to adjacent leads
  • Expect less stretching or damage to target lead
  • Reduce risk of dislodgement of target or adjacent leads

The low-temperature excimer laser operates in the ultraviolet spectrum at 308nm to ablate target tissue at a depth of 50 microns.

In clinical studies, the laser sheath showed a higher success rate for lead removal over telescoping mechanical sheaths: 94% for SLS II versus 64% for mechanical methods1.

SLS II easily ablates a variety of binding tissue with speed and predictability.
